As electric machine technology emerges, new technologies can provide innovative solutions for the electric car sector. The EU-funded EM-TECH project has developed innovative electric machine technology solutions for automotive traction. The project focused on passenger car and van applications to provide competitive costs and significant reduction of motor energy loss during vehicle operation, and to decrease the rare earth content, including implementing magnet recycling solutions.
The solutions include innovative direct and active cooling designs, virtual sensing functionalities, enhanced machine control, electric gearing and digital twin-based optimisation. They feature embedded systematic consideration of life cycle analysis and life cycle costing aspects right from the early design stages.
The project consortium was composed by 10 European organizations and coordinated by AVL List GmbH, Austria.

Engagement with stakeholders is at the core of communication, dissemination and exploitation. Accordingly, it was our outmost goal to support these activities; either by supporting project partners having the connections available or creating activities by ourselves. An example to engage with young scientists was the European Researchers Night in 2024, where our team was building mini e-motors that left participants stunning. We further had the chance to rebuild this experiments as part of the “Forscher:innen Tag” at the primary school in Tobelbad.
Supporting the coordinator and fulfilling our quality requirements in terms of public deliverables, we were managing the deliverable review process up until the point of handing over the document to the coordinator for submission. Co-managing the E-VOLVE Cluster, our team has made an effort to create a strong connection between the E-VOLVE Cluster communication and the EM-TECH communication. Consequently, EM-TECH has continuously been included in the E-VOLVE Cluster Newsletters.
As part of the exploitation strategy, together with the project partners we produced One Pagers to present the Key Exploitable Results of the project:
