AETHER EU Project Officially Launched at Technische Universität Ilmenau

We are excited to announce the successful launch of the AETHER EU Project, a major European research initiative dedicated to advancing the next generation of electric vehicles. The project officially kicked off in June at Technische Universität Ilmenau, bringing together leading researchers, technology experts, and industry partners from across Europe.

Coordinated by the Thuringian Innovation Centre for Mobility (ThIMo) at TU Ilmenau under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Valentin Ivanov, AETHER unites twelve partners from academia and industry with the shared goal of making electric vehicles more energy-efficient, sustainable, and comfortable for users.

The project focuses on innovative solutions that optimize vehicle performance through intelligent vehicle control, advanced thermal management, and system-wide energy optimization. Particular attention will be given to enhancing passenger comfort while maximizing energy efficiency, even under challenging weather and temperature conditions.

As the project coordinator, ThIMo contributes its extensive expertise in vehicle engineering and provides state-of-the-art testing infrastructure. Its specialized facilities will serve as a central development and validation hub, enabling realistic testing of electric vehicles under extreme environmental conditions and in scenarios supported by wireless vehicle-to-vehicle and smart-city communication technologies.

The kick-off meeting provided an excellent opportunity for consortium members to meet in person, exchange ideas, and align on the project’s ambitious objectives. A highlight of the event was the guided tour of the TU Ilmenau campus and ThIMo’s advanced testing facilities, showcasing the outstanding research infrastructure that will support the project throughout its duration.

AETHER is one of the seven projects selected under the 2Zero Partnership 2025 Work Programme, a European initiative accelerating the transition toward zero-emission road mobility. Through its innovative approach to energy efficiency, thermal comfort, and user-centered vehicle optimization, AETHER will contribute to extending driving range, improving sustainability, and enhancing the overall electric vehicle experience.
